In recent years, the mountain construction method of tunneling in urban areas is being widely applied in Japan. In order to prevent damage to adjacent environment due to excavation in difficult geological conditions, ground improvement and reinforcement techniques are required. In this report, the present application situation of the mountain construction method was examined based on the database investigation and case studies. As the representative of environmental problems caused by the underground construction, the occurrence condition and prediction technique of surface subsidence were analyzed. Furthermore, the rational auxiliary techniques are also discussed.
