To find out the characteristics of the amino acid and polypeptide profiles of Cervi pavum cornu (unossified deer pilous antler) for quality control, amino acid analysis and gel electrophoresis were performed. Five kinds of Cervi pavum cornu and Cervi coma (ossified deer antler) were used. Free amino acids in their extracts were determined. Some variations depending on the habitat and species of original animal were observed. Hydrolysis of the extract with 6 N-HCI produced an average 1,539% increase in amino acid contents, which indicated that 93% of total amino acids were in polypeptide forms. Polypeptides with M.W. 140,000-120,000, 68,000-67,000 and 43,000 were detected in every Cervi pavum cornu specimen when tested by gel electrophoresis. No polypeptide was found in Cervi coma.
