• We investigated the sebaceous secretion control effects of some crude drugs contained in Chinese medicine prescriptions used for the treatment of acne, eruption, dry skin and seborrheic alopecia by using the newly developed hamster ear sebaceous gland size measurement method. Sixteen crude drugs, selected from such Chinese medicinal prescriptions were tested for their effect on the sebaceous gland activation by this method. Three of the crude drugs tested, namely, Ginseng Radix, Houttuyniae Herba and Citri Leiocarpae Exocarpium were found to be effective in reducing the sebaceous gland size by 30%, 20% and 29% (p < 0.01), respectively.
