A single intraperitoneal post-irradiation injection of a thermostable fraction of an extract from Acanthopanax senticosus (RUPR. et MAXIM.) Harms was found to improve the 30-day survival ratio of mice irradiated with 720 R of X-rays. The extract from root of the plant collected in Heilongjiang, China was more effective than that from terrestrial stems of the plant from Hokkaido, Japan. The injection of the fraction accerelated the recovery of blood cell counts of erythrocytes, leukocytes and thrombocytes in mice irradiated with 550 R. A methanol-soluble fraction of the extract or cold water extract from the plant failed to protect mice from irradiation. The radioprotective principles in this plant seem to have similar characteristics to those in ginseng.
