The following five herbaceous drugs, i.e. Tetragoniae Herba called "Bankyo"; Saxifragae stoloniferae Herba "Kojiso"; Conandri ramondioidis Herba "Iwajisha"; Polygoni avicularis Herba "Henchiku"; and Hyperici Herba "Shorengyo" were palynologically studied with a light and a scanning electron microscope. The results are as follows. The collecting season of those herbaceous drugs may be surmised by comparing the number of pollen grains per gram of the market specimens with those in the flowers or anther of the respective original plants. The number of various contaminant pollen grains in the herbaceous drugs, such as Cryptomeriajaponica, Pinus sp. may indicate the circumstances of their growing habitat and the flowering season of the original plants of the market crude drug samples, or the harvest season thereof. SEM observation showed that the morphological features of pollen grains from the purchased crude drugs and those from field specimens of respective original plants were quite similar each other with scarcely any difference. The above facts showed that the materials used in this study were definitely of the respective original plants.
