The water-soluble substances of the dried fruits of Zizyphus genus (Rhamnaceae) have been obtained in 85. % yield from Japanese crude drugs and in 62.5% yield from Chinese samples. The both extracts have been fractionated by the gel-filtration on a column of Sephadex G-25 and examined by the uses of cellulose thin-layer chromatography and gas-liquid chromatography of trimethylsilylated derivatives. The results of quantitative determinations of carbohydrates showed that the water-extract of Japanese Zizyphi Fructus contains 36.1% of D-fructose, 32.5% of D-glucose, 14.8% of oligosaccharides composed of fructose and glucose, 1.4% of arabinan and 2.0% of galacturonan, but no sucrose is contained in this sample. In the case of Chinese Zyziphi Fructus, the extract contains 30.8% of D-fructose, 32.5% of D-glucose, 8.8% of sucrose, 13.0% of the other oligosaccharides composed of fructose and glucose, 0.3% of arabinan and 0.5% of galacturonan. D-Fructose, D-glucose and sucrose were identified respectively as D-fructose methylphenylosazone, D-glucose p-nitrophenylhydrazone, and sucrose octaacetate.
