Wild and cultivated Japanese Lithospermum officinale L. var. erythrorhizon MAXIM, were studied to compare the weight of their roots, the contents of ethereal extracts, pigments isolated as a copper complex, fatty substance, and unsaponifiable matters (Table I, II). Fatty acids were identified by means of gaschromatography (Table III, IV). A characteristic odor of Lithospermum root was attributed to the existence of iso-, and n-valeric acid which is revealed by the data of gas chromatgraphy (Table V), thermal differential analysis (Table VI) and mass-spectrometry (Table VII).
