For the qualitative judgement of rhubarb, it is necessary to examine the content of its active components and results of its pharmacological tests in addition to its appearance and flavor, and presence or absence of the masern. The author, having established a method for the biological test of laxatives, has applied this method to the qualitative judgement of rhubarbs obtained in Chinese and Japanese markets and produced for trial, affording the results shown below: 1) Of the anthraquinones isolated from rhubarb, rhein, aloe-emodin, and emodin had laxative activity, but chrysophanol and physcion did not, and the active components acted synergistically. Further, the components of rhubarb were isolated systematically, and as combined anthraquinones were found to have strong activity, anthraquinone glycosides were tested and aloe-emodin glycoside and emodin glycoside were observed to possess stronger activity than their respective aglycons, while chrysophanol, physcion glycoside had no such activity. 2) The quality of rhubarb was also investigated in terms of the content of anthraquinones and laxative activity, and it was found that rhubarb can be divided into the three kinds: one belongs to kinmon-series and is recognized as of good quality from olden times, another belongs to do-daio series and is considered to be of poor quality and to show side-effects, and the third belongs to emodi-series and is situated between the above two in quality. 3) Among the rhubarbs produced for trial, Rheum coreanum NAKAI closely resembled kinmon rhubarb, followed by Rheum palmatum L. var. tanguticum MAXIM. and Rheum palmatum L. and Rheum officinale BAILL. were a little different, but all of them were found to have similar medicinal value as rhubarb of good quality. Moreover, it was observed that rhubarb collected three years after sowing was best in yield, content of anthraquinones, and laxative activity. The rhizome and root portion of rhubarb are sliced without being barked, dried in the sunshine, and used for the purpose without the quality being impaired.
