Inyokaku has been used for the purpose of sexualtonics and analeptics for a long time and its original plant is Epimedium (Berberidaceae). Epimedium may be classified into many groups and some of them are seen in commercial samples. The commercial samples of Chinese In'yokaku may be classified into two groups: one belongs to Epimedium sagittatum BAK. and the other to Epimedium grandiflorum MORR. var. Thunbergianum NAKAI. The former (E.sagittatum) is further classified into several groups by their morphological and anatomical differences. At present the Japanese In'yokakus on the market are the products from Shinshu and Niigata Prefectures. Judging from the anatomical and morphological standpoints of view, the original plant of Shinshu product is identified to be Epimedium grandiflorum MORREN var. Thunbergianum NAKAI and that of Niigata is classified to be Epimedium sempervirens NAKAI var. hypoglaucum MAKINO. This report deals with the morphology of these two species in addition to the several species which were fouud in wide range.
