Firstly, the crude drugs 'Ryuu-tan' (Japanese and Chinese Gentians) are morphologically classified in two groups by the size of rhizomes. Secondly, in the cross section of roots, there are seen the following differences: (1) the existance or non-existance of cork layer in exodermis, (2) of stone cells in cortex, (3) of xylem fibres, (4) of pith, (5) the shape of hypodermis, (6) of xylem, (7) the number of daughter cells in endodermis, (8) the size of pith, (9) the crystalshape in parenchym and pith. In the cross section of rhizome, the existence or non-existence of stone cells. Lastly, the whole shape of hypodermis and endodermis in surface view, and the mode of division of each cell in both layers into daughter cells. By comparing the differences above mentioned, we can decide the original plant of the drug 'Ryuu-tan'.
