Coptis roots in Chinese drug market have been known as the rhizomes of Coptis Teeta WALLICH, whereas several kinds of the drug are seen, The pharmacognostical study was made on four different kinds got in Peipin drug market : Ya-huang-lien (Ya-chow-Coptis), Chuan-huan-lien (Szechuan Coptis), Yun-huang-lien (Yunnan Coptis) and Tz'u-huang-lien (Tz'u-chcu Coptis), They are different not only but in shapes but in inner structures. We cannot think that they are of one species, Coptis Teeta, and moreover, cannot identify which is of the named species.
