Rutin. a flavonoid pigment, has been isolated from many plants, but what have been used as material for pharmaceutical production are Sophora japonica, Fagopyrum esculentum, and Fagopyrum tataricum. In Japan, the production of the flower buds of Sophora japonica is scarce and as a matter of fact their importation is difficult, and in order that buckwheat may be used as an auxiliary food, we should refrain from using it for pharmaceutical purposes. We have isolated rutin from the leaves and the flowers of Fagopyrum cymosupn, MEISN. (cf. J. Pharm. Soc. Japan 71, 266 (1951)). The yield of rutin is low in spring, gradually increasing to the peak in summer through autumn. Fagopyrum, cymosum, MEISN. is a species of Polygonaceae, which is widely distributed in China. This plant resembles buckwheat but is a perenial herb. As a source of rutin, this plant has the following advantages. (1) Perenial herb - Unlike buckwheat and tatary buckwheat it does not require sowing. (2) The yield of rutin is rich, about 4.0%(May) - 8.5% (October) of the leaves, and 8.0-13,0% (average 10%) of the flowers (October) on the moisture-free basis. (3) The cultivation is very easy and for the propagation, it is practicable to plant cuttings. (4) The harvest period is long - If we pick only the leaves, we can crop 6 times per year (every month during May to October) and if we cut the stem, we can harvest 3 times per year. (5) Though the method of preparing the dry leaves (sundrying, dehydrating by the moderately heated air or the infrared rays under certain conditions) is simple, it does not cause loss of rutin.
