Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication is an effective way to avoid potential road accident and enhance transportation efficiency by exchanging mobility information of vehicles. The reliability of the communication under actual road environment suffers from propagation issues such as fading and shadowing. In order to improve the reliability, V2V broadcast with relay stations has been proposed and its performance has been shown by simulation. However, the performance of CSMA/CA broadcast relay network has not been well analyzed and optimized. In this paper, a theoretical model is proposed to evaluate the performance of such network in detail. In order to be accord with the realistic vehicular environment, the model assumes a typical crossroad and takes fading, shadowing, hidden terminal problem and capture effects into account. The simulation results validated the accuracy of the proposed model. The influence of system parameters, distance between nodes and carrier sense threshold, on the reliability of the network is studied through the analysis. Some suggestions to enhance the reliability of V2V communication is provided based on analysis results.
