Is the rural area merely the fringe area of a city? As someone who has viewed Japanese rural scenery in terms of the characteristics of the topography such as coastal sand dunes, lagoons, alluvial plains, diluvial plateaus, alluvial fans, and steep slopes of the mountainous regions, I cannot think so. On the contrary, these fringe spaces may very well be the origins of the history of the Japanese people. This is because we can think that we Japanese have had our natural and social normative consciousness formed by the process of being challenged by severe natural conditions including topography, and the centre of what can be thought of as our political and cultural origins was received from these very places.
