Since two New Jerusalems were built in Varallo Sesia in the province of Vercelli and in San Vivaldo near Florence, no similar devotional complexes were constructed in Italy for more than half a century. However, after the Council of Trent, which lasted for nearly twenty years(1545-63), Sacri Monti(Holy Mounts) were built one after another at the southern foot of the Alps, initially following the model of the complex of Varallo, and later arranging a fixed number of chapels at regular intervals resembling the beads of a rosary to suggest prayer and devotion as determined and recognised by the Catholic Church. In this paper, first of all, I explained how the chapel arrangements of the New Jerusalems in Varallo and San Vivaldo changed. Then I traced the developement of those Sacred Mounts that appeared after the Council of Trent, specifying in every main theme when, where and by whom the complexes were built, and with what kind of outward features. Moreover, I tired to identify the types of arrangement of the chapels (except those built in the church) in every site I surveyed, as it had not been done in previous studies.
