Materials make art expression interesting and their characteristics are realized when you appreciate art work. However, in most art classes in school, ready-made paints are used for creating art work and art appreciation is usually conducted through printed media. This way of appreciation may hide the real value of art work because we tend to focus on superficial forms, such as structure, color scheme, and motif. Therefore, I provided a course to transform familiar material into paint and to use it for painting. The purposes of the course were (1) to enhance interest in materials by learning how paints are made and by preparing them and (2) to expand the level of expression and appreciation by using familiar materials. In this course, oyster shells, which are abundant in Hiroshima Prefecture, were used. Oyster shells are recycled into bird feeds and fertilizers and known to help improving water quality. In the Japanese paintings, they have been used as white paint called GOFUN. This paper describes the course which focused on effectiveness of oyster shells as expression material and its results. I focus on familiar, regional material and discuss its potential for expanding the level of art expression and its learning effects.
