Along with the deepening cultural communication between Japan and China, theexchange of painting and calligraphy has been the subject of much academic scrutiny.This paper will study Chinese painters and paintings through an historical examination of the exchange between Japan and China based on medieval Japanese records. The careful analysis of these records of Chinese painters and paintings will reveal the conditions of medieval cultural and commercial communication between China and Japan, the relevance of Chinese artists in Japan and, most importantly, illuminate the cultural impact and integration of Chinese and Japanese ideology. This paper develops the idea of reciprocity in trade and the exchange of thought between China and Japan. The spread of painting as a form of art differs from that of language and literature as the latter relies upon the use of words with strong historical and regional associations. Therefore, with the introduction of Chinese culture to Japanthrough writing, the Japanese encountered formidable diffi culties in absorbing elements of Chinese culture into their own as many concepts indigenous to China embodied in language eluded direct translation into Japanese. Paintings, however, are not only free from the restriction of language, they are also more subjective than writing, which meanspeople can appreciate this form of art regardless of cultural background.
