This article examines the koso painting style Kuroda Seiki attempted to establishin Japan, and focuses on one characteristic element of this style: a mural or wall-painting quality. Also established in this essay is the infl uence of Raphael Collin, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, and Ferdinand Hodler who originally infl uenced Kuroda and Fujishima Takeji with their use of mural characteristics. Focusing solely on the mural quality renders it possible to analyse those works that fall outside the koso painting mould, making it therefore possible to discover new perceptions in koso painting. This then allows for aninvestigation in the koso painting and mural elements in the works of Aoki Shigeru.
