The Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake on October 23, 2004 and the Niigata Chuetsu Offshore Earthquake on July 16, 2007 caused various types of land disasters in Niigata Prefecture. This paper outlines two countermeasures against the liquefaction of land banks and landslides, which were implemented as exemplified measures by the prefectural government, with the hope that they would become widely used as a reference for post-earthquake reconstruction in mountainous areas. Niigata Prefecture was once again reminded of the importance of preventing the loss of precious lives due to a natural disaster when Great East Japan Earthquake occurred. To reduce the risk of land disasters, it is important to know the history of the land and develop countermeasures based on past knowledge and experiences.
