This article summarises an English speaking test methodology developed and used at Kanda University of International Studies(KUIS)in Chiba, Japan. The KUIS speaking test is designed to assess spoken proficiency across a four category construct: pronunciation, fluency, lexico-grammar and communication skills. The paper begins by reviewing current test formats used by other leading language testing organizations for those unfamiliar with the field. It then goes on to describe and compare the KUIS test method in light of these established speaking tests. Finally a description of organizational aspects such as administrative methodology, materials and post-test satistical issues is provided. The primary intent of this article is to give readers a broader appreciation of current trends in speaking test practice within Japan and to stimulate debate on the subject.
