When operating main engine, vessel's engineers normally follow instruction books furnished by shipbuilders. It is doubtful however if,by means of such books alone, intentions of the engine builders are properly conveyed to the engineers, or true requirements of the latter are adequately answered. With this point of view, the Kansai Society of Naval Architects has recently circulated among vessels in service a questionnaire consisting of the following items to study actual experiences in handling of diesel engines: 1. Particulars of main engine. 2. Cooling method of main engine. 3. Vessel's past service records. 4. On handling of engine at starting and stopping. 5. On handling of engine at stand-by. 6. Comments on warming and cooling of main engine. Experience in severe cold. 7. On drawing of piston. 8. Time when F.O. valves are replaced. 9. Type of system oil, cylinderoil and fuel oil used. Answers received from 79 vessels are summarised.
