Uncertainty as a measure of the reliability of measurement results was first advocated by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and several other organizations in "Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM)". Since then, the uncertainty has become prevalent in various fields involved in metrology. In this study, the uncertainty of ring gauge diameters measured with a profile projector was evaluated. It was found that the uncertainty depends significantly on the magnification of the projection lens, and that the dominant component is the uncertainty associated with the calibration of the profile projector.
