The purpose of this paper is to show the significance of the letters between Kumagusu Minakata (1867-1941) and Shiro Kaoze (1875-1951), which were recently found and published in 2007. Kumagusu Minakata was an amateur scholar who had been known by his unique scientific research and social activities. Minakata returned from Britain in 1900, and he secluded in Mt. Nachi and continued his academic research there. But, because his papers had not been accepted by European academic community, he withdrew himself from conducting research for about two years. However, the research at this period must have been important for his unique activities in his later life. The letters between Minakata and Shiro Koaze are significant in that there has been little material regarding his research activities during this period and this material will shed a new light on them.
