This paper attempts to develop a general theory of non-violent resistance. In this paper, I will introduce a concept "original division", mainly developed by a radical philosopher Hitoshi Imamura, who passed away last year. The original division is, according to Imamura, a conduct of drawing line which distinguishes one from the other, i.e. subject from object, self from other, which presumably the very cause of violence. This seems to be suggesting, in other words, we could be less violent if we stay before the division. However, this explanation still remains abstract, and the applicability of the idea is not uncertain. In order to examine the applicability, I introduce a less abstract concept which is derived from the experiences of Eastern Europe, namely "Refolution", first presented by Garton-Ash, the prominent researcher of the Eastern Europe's revolution in 1989. By combining these two ideas, I contend that there is an important prerequisite for non-violent resistance, that is, sharing identities between the ruler and those who engage in the resistance. Three concrete histories of non-violent resistance from such nations and regions as India, Denmark, and Eastern Europe will be introduced for the examination of the applicability.
