The enormous consumption of oil constitutes the basis of modern society. Oil provides fuel and chemical raw materials, which are indispensable for modern living. Oil consumption continues to grow worldwide, significantly damaging the global environment. In 2009, Japan depended on nuclear power for 30% of its energy generation. However, the nuclear fuel technology has not advanced, and the problem of radioactive waste has not been resolved. Japan is a society that is responsible for mass energy consumption. The population is concentrated in urban areas, and there is considerable concern about disasters and disaster prevention. Recently, a population decline has diffused the urban population and produced a significant environmental load. I review the current lifestyle and recommend a paradigm shift to return to old patterns, to some extent.
