The hypolipidemic activities of water extract of the stigma of Zea mays L. (Nanbanmou in Japanese name) (NM) were investigated in normal and hypercholesterol mice. NM (200 mg/kg) reduced the blood cholesterol level in both normal and hypercholesterol mice. NM also reduced the blood cholesterol in Triton-induced hyperlipidemia. The results suggest that the hypocholesterolemic effect of NM is derived, at least in part, from the inhibition of cholesterol synthesis in liver.Zea mays
