We analyzed the odors of 97 crude drugs prescribed in Japanese Pharmacopoeia 14th Edition by the quartz oscillator and lipidic double molecular film type odor sensor. Results showed that it was in general difficult to discriminate the materials one from another by odor sensing. However, some similar drugs such as Persicae Semen and Armeniacae Semen, or Angelicae Radix and Cnidii Rhizoma, measured almost the same degree and pattern. On the other hand, odors which could not be sensed by the human sense of smell such as Polia could be detected. Although, as to Polia and Fossilia Ossis Mastodi, both are white and have no odor that can be sensed by the nose, they could be distinguished from each other by this method. Hereafter the development of odor sensors for the identification of crude drugs is expected.
