Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan is composed of 5 types of pure, powdered Chinese Materia Medica: Fructus Lycii, Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, Semen Cuscutae, Semen Plantaginis and Fructus Rubi. In this paper, microscopic study of Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan and the crude drug of its five compositions are undertaken. Their micro-morphological features of identification are described, and microphotographs are taken and compared. Samples from six different Chinese patent medicine manufacturers and four different lots of products from one of the selected manufacturers have been investigated. The results show that all the compositions canbe found in all the samples. This study shows that microscopic identification is an important method of determining the authenticity of both Chinese Materia Medica and Chinese Patent Medicine.
