YAN LONG tea is an aqueous extract of roasted leaves of Luobuma [Apocynum venetum L. (Apocynaceae)]. Aqueous extracts of roasted Luobuma leaves have been shown to have an antihypertensive effect in several hypertensive rat models. Hyperin (hyperoside) and isoquercitrin are known as the principal flavonoids in Luobuma. The effects of chronic oral administration of a hyperin/isoquercitrin mixture and isoquercitrin alone on blood pressure were respectively investigated in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). The hyperin/isoquercitrin mixture showed a significant antihypertensive effect in SHR by 6week treatment, however isoquercitrin alone showed no effect through out a 10-week dosing period. It has been reported that intravenous injection of extract from Luobuma containing both hyperin and isoquercitrin decreases blood pressure, however hyperin decreases blood pressure transiently and isoquercitrin has no effect on blood pressurewhen hyperin and isoquercitrin are respectively administered intravenously. These results suggest that the presence of both hyperin and isoquercitrin is probably meaningful for the antihypertensive effect of YAN LONG tea.
