The effects of tuberous root size for seed on tuberous root growth and alkaloid content of aconite were studied. New cultivars, Sanwa-okukabuto 1 and Sanwa 2 were used for this study. Planting smaller seed-tuberous roots resulted in lower plant and tuberous root growth with larger variation among hills. The total alkaloid content was the lowest when small seed-tuberous roots were planted. Each alkaloid's content was also affected by the size of the seed-tuberous roots planted. It can be said that a larger seed-tuberous root is desirable for high tuberous root growth and high alkaloid content. But the net tuberous root yield ('tuberous roots harvested' -'seed tuberous roots') might decline when a very large seed-tuberous root is used. This necessitates further study.
