Geographical Variation of Falcarindiol Content in the Underground Part of Glehnia littoralis

Glehnia littoralis plants were collected at various sites in Japan and the content of falcarindiol a polyacetylenic compound, in the underground part was determined together with another polyacetylenic compound, panaxynol, and eight linear-type furanocoumarins. The falcarindiol content was 0.031-0.344% and no particular relation was found between the content and plant habitat although the panaxynol content of plants occurring in the southern part of Japan was significantly higher than those in the northern part. The present findings show that either the panaxynol content alone or the total content of falcarindiol and panaxynol can be used as a factor of polyacetylenes to distinguish the type of G. littoralis plants by their chemical constituents.
