Tyrosinase inhibiting compound from Asam wood (Mangifera quadrifida), which belongs to Anacardiaceae, was investigated to find whitening agents which could be used in cosmetic products. The natural compound which remarkably inhibited tyrosinase was found in ethanol eluate fraction separated by LH-20 gel chromatography from 50% aqueous ethanol extracts. This novel compound was identified as (4,6-Dihydroxy)-dihydrobenzofuran-3-yl-(3,4-dihydroxy)-phenyl ketone. It inhibited the oxidation of L-tyrosine (IC_<50> : 3.5μg/ml) more sturdily than that of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) (IC_<50> :16.7μg/ml), and suppressed the melanin biosynthesis in the B16 mouse melanoma cell line.
