Ten strains of Wolfiporia cocos were cultivated in field. In March, mycelium of each strain was inoculated into pine logs and incubated for 5 months in the forest. In August, the logs were laid below the ground. In December next year, the sclerotia formed on the surface of the pine logs. The sclerotia of 9 strains were smaller than 5 cm in diameter, and those of 1 strain were larger than 5 cm in diameter. The yield of the sclerotia was 62 kg per 1 m^3 pine log. The ash content of the dried sclerotia was 0.122%, which complies with the standard of the pharmacopoeia of Japan. No difference in the TLC pattern was observed between the cultivated sclerotia and commercial ones. Differences in the amount of pachymic acid, dehydropachymic acid, water extract and diluted ethanol extract of the dried sclerotia were not observed between the cultivated sclerotia and comercial ones, either.
