The culture associated with any given second or foreign language has almost always had some kind of role in the teaching of that language. In the case of English, for example, EFL and ESL lessons around the world have often involved some introduction of Anglo-American culture. However, with the evolving status of English as a global lingua franca, such a simple choice of cultural content has been increasingly questioned, and more varied cultures reflecting the range of current users of English have been introduced. This has potential implications for the cultural and social aspects of the roles of affective variables in the acquisition of English as a second language.
