The Japanese interjection un as a negative response is said to have a unique tone-the falling-rising tone. However, the pitch of a Japanese word does not generally rise after a fall caused by accent. In order to verify the description of the falling-rising tone given in previous studies, I conducted two kinds of experiments: a reading task and a perception test. I found that the interjection requires a rising tone after falling. Therefore, I considered there to be two tone patterns of the interjection: a slight rising tone after falling and a prominent rising tone after falling.
