This study examined the relationship between types of maternal stress, parenting attitudes and support, aspects of childcare use, and outcomes of child development and health conditions of 5-year-olds in daycare in Japan. Results showed that the stress of mothers immediately after birth was significantly related to punishing the child and also significantly related to the lack of interaction with their child, such as reading books, shopping, and playing. Spousal support and cooperation was also a key factor in outcomes. The findings suggest that, in support for childrearing, measures that reduce the stress of mothers at this time are important.
