• Japanese learners of English have in their native lexicons a large number of English-based loanwords (i.e. gairaigo). These provide interlingual cognate pairs - words similar in form but not necessarily in meaning. However, English words undergo katakana transcriptions phonological and transformations when borrowed into Japanese, which complicate cognate recognition. Fortunately, learners are aided by a psycholinguistic phonetic decoder whereby English forms (e.g. cheese) are perceived in a phonologically altered form typically identical to a loanword (e.g. chiizu). This paper will review the relevant literature regarding this proposed processing device - the "katakana filter" -- and present a study of two advanced Japanese learners of English, which offered further insights.
