• Dynamic response of submerged structures subjected to UNDerwater EXplosion (UNDEX) loading has been an interesting field for naval researcher. UNDEX tests have been conducted to investigate shock performance of various structures. But UNDEX ponds in Japan are limited as to the size and shape. The bubble behavior can be influenced by the free surface effect when UNDEX tests with large explosive charge are conducted. So the bubble behavior near the free surface is investigated by using a wire explosion device and high-speed video camera in this paper. Numerical simulation by using commercial finite element software is conducted to investigate the phenomenon of the bubble behavior near the free surface.
