The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is attempting to implement a new English language teaching (ELT) curriculum and syllabi, together with new methodologies and materials in Japanese state schools. However, the ELT contexts in schools and teacher job satisfaction have not been fully investigated. This study aimed to listen to the voices from the real classroom of English as a foreign language (EFL), and to examine EFL teachers' job satisfaction which might be closely related to their contribution to ELT innovation in their education settings. By interviewing four teachers in different upper secondary schools, we investigated the factors which seem to affect their job satisfaction. As a result, we disclosed a variety of problems which they claimed to have in their teaching situations, and identified a gap between the MEXT's policy and their actual needs or hopes. More bottom-up levels of research and in-service teacher education need to be implemented in order to encourage teachers to develop their professional competence and autonomy.
