The aim of this paper is to consider appropriate directions for education policy in Japan in the light of economics, and particularly in foreign language education. In Japan, of foreign languages taught in schools, English has been overwhelmingly predominant, but in the present discussion, foreign language education also includes education in languages other than English. The paper first outlines the historical background of foreign language education reform. Second, it considers appropriate directions for language education policy in Japan, in the light of globalization, introducing several unresolved issues revealed by a questionnaire survey concerning attitudes towards foreign language education given to such groups as research centers. Finally, the paper discusses the relationship between the enhancement of Japan's economic interests and the demand for foreign language education considered important.
