Cognitive radio has been suggested as an effective method for dynamic spectrum utilization. We propose a multi-frequency RTS/CTS scheme to restrain the hidden terminal problem in cognitive radio. More specifically, we develop an interference avoidance criterion from propagation characteristics based on the proposed scheme and then study the impact of the propagation. Finally, the simulation results indicate that the required transmission power for the interference avoidance is affected heavily by radio propagation and by some means or other, such as diversity, the required transmission power can be reduced.
