The present study investigates the validity of the Aspect Hypothesis (AH), which suggests correlations between lexical aspect and the emergence of tense and aspect (TA) markers in the second language (L2) acquisition. This hypothesis postulates that all L2 learners, irrespective of their first language (L1), follow the same developmental path; however, its validity has been challenged by recent empirical studies. In the present study, 13 adult Japanese speakers of English with advanced/intermediate levels of proficiency and five native speakers of English were compared in their ability to interpret sentences with present perfect and simple past verbal morphology. The results are shown to partially support the AH, suggesting that not only the lexical aspect but also the L1 may affect the development of TA morphology.
