Illumination techniques can be generally classified into two groups-so-called "illumination" emphasizing the light sources themselves, and "floodlighting" emphasizing illuminated objects. Illumination had been a mainstream lighting technique in Japan at first since carbon filament lamps were put into practical use in 1890, and floodlighting was introduced when incandescent lamps filled with nitrogen were realized in 1914. Such illuminations have been practiced since about a century ago, and their techniques have evolved as new light sources were developed. In the future, we can expect that new ideas will be fertilized and new techniques will be developed as new light sources emerge.
