The primary interest of studies on monologues has been on cognitive aspects. In these studies, monologues that appear in the period of transition from external speech to inner speech (after the age of3 years) have been discussed. The present study evaluated early monologues observed at 1.5-3 years of age on the basis of data obtained by longitudinal observation. Many monologues were observed in this period, and they were found to bear the following 3 functions: 1) Situation-adjusted self-regulation, 2) egoformation, and 3) replay of experience and knowledge.
