After oil crises on 1973, R & D of solar thermal energy technology was started as one of the energy technology developments from the viewpoint of energy security in Japan. Its major object was to establish the technology generating electric power by solar energy. Two different types of pilot plants were constructed and succeeded first to generate electric power from solar heat in the world on 1982. Although R & D of their plants was finished after two year operation of pilot plants, solar total energy system, which supplies electric power and heat energy, was constructed and was operated for about three years. However, Japan was finished all of R & D of high temperature solar thermal energy in spite of these efforts. In this paper, the outlines of these technologies are described with comparisons of the developed overseas plants.
