Recently, as a measure against fossil fuel depletion and global warming, application of biomass as a part of energy resource is expected. Biomass, that is carbon neutral and a renewable energy, doesn't increase CO_2 gas in the atmosphere. Among biomass energy, sewage sludge is easy to utilize because estimation of the amount is easy and its characteristics are stable. Bio-fuel which is converted from sewage sludge is able to reduce the amount of coal burned at the coal-fired power plant and to contribute to prevention of global warming. In addition, bio-fuel develops the sustainable and a long term sewage sludge recycling system. Tsukishima Kikai Co., Ltd. has developed the technology, converts sewage sludge into bio-fuel suitable for coal-fired power plant, in collaboration with J-POWER Co., Ltd. and METAWATER Co., Ltd. Compared to conventional carbonization, the developed technologies increase a calorific value of the bio-fuel by lower temperature (250-350 degree C)carbonization and enhance the value of bio-fuel from sewage sludge as a alternative coal fuel. In addition, pelletization of the dry cake inhibits spontaneous combustibility of bio-fuel. We report the characteristic of the bio-fuel and lower temperature carbonization system, and introduce the first business scheme using "lower temperature carbonization."
