The purpose of study was to confirm whether nonnative readers of Japanese spontaneously pay attention to written Japanese in a simulation of signpost recognition. Twenty-three nonnative Japanese participants performed recognition test of place names expressed both in Japanese Kanji and in alphabetic expression. In some trials, the alphabetic expression did not correspond to Japanese, so that the participants should have looked at also Japanese Kanji to correctly respond to the test. Results showed that there were only 5 participants who could not completely look at Japanese Kanji. Sixty-five percent of participants could respond to at least one written Japanese Kanji over chance level. Visibility of Japanese Kanji in signposts would be important not only for Japanese but also for nonnative Japanese.
