There are 628 preserved pieces of physical apparatus belonging to the period from 1867-1945, the era of modernization in Japan, which have been preserved by Kyoto University. The collection includes a number of experimental items of apparatus for research, many of which are measuring instruments. Davis Baird perceives scientific instruments as "Thing Knowledge" and classifies them into three categories: "Model," "Working Knowledge," and "Encapsulating Knowledge." Measuring instruments correspond to the third category. According to Baird, a scientific instrument is non-language historical material. I propose that many measuring instruments in the collection can be used for the study of a scientist's laboratory activities by illustrating two examples: the Thomson quadrant electrometer and the echelon grating.
