From a simplified hydraulic mechanism of the change of valley bed elevation, it is derived that the channel slope S can be expressed by a power function of the distance L from the divide. The exponent of L represents the concavity of the longitudinal valley profile. By the S-L relationship and the concavity of the radial valleys, the Merapi volcanic body is divided into summit zone (central cone), flank zone (predominantly erosional) and foot zone (predominantly depositional). At the flank zone the profile is very rugged, whereas at the foot zone the S-L relationship is linear, that is, the profile is smoothly concaved. In the middle of the foot zone, a clear break in the concavity exists. From the channel slope and the exponent of L, the upper half of the foot zone is inferred to be the deposition area of lahars, and the lower half is the area influenced by the action of bandjirs.
