The textile industry region in Yamanashi Prefecture consists of several districts. Four of them, i.e. Tsuru, Otsuki, Uenohara and Fuji Yoshida are located in Gunnai, the eastern part of Yamanashi Prefecture. Their main products are silk and artificial silk fabrics for kimono, and miscellaneous goods including western clothes. Since 1960, the local characters of these four districts have changed because of the changes of the socio-economic background of Japan. Some of the weavers are liable to move to other industries, or to the metropolitan area in pursuit of better working conditions. Gunnai textile region has gradually lost it's traditional products. Consequently, the character of Tsuru City's industry region is transforming.
